Leap of Faith

With harness secured, I climbed the cold metal bars jammed into the towering tree. I reached the platform, clambered on, glanced down, then regretted it.

I wished I had claws to grip the tree trunk tighter. Tim the counselor called up from the earth far below, "When you are ready..." (like I am EVER going to be ready) "...take two steps to the edge of the platform, and we will count to three. And then you're gonna jump."

I took many, many deep breaths. After a few million years, my feet took four tiny agonizing steps toward the edge of the platform. Then Tim started counting way too fast, "OneTwoThree!" I concluded, "Well, I guess I have to jump, don't I?"

I tilted forward slightly, bent down, leaned out a little bit more, and sprung with all my strength off the platform. The distant trapeze bar came closer and closer. The next moment, I was clutching the bar securely with sweaty hands. The only words that came to my mind were, "I'm glad I made it."

  2. That was sooo good Jacob!! I love how you can write the sentence the exact way you heard it like, "Then Tim started counting way too fast, 'OneTwoThree'" When you didn't put the spaces in between the three words, it seemed like it went by a lot faster.

Really good job. See you tomorrow! LZ

  3. Jacob! GREAT job! I just love that you REGRETTED it! I don't even have to know what EXACTLY it is that you're doing: I only know you wish you weren't. I love your words like cold, jammed, clammered. I love that you WISH YOU HAD CLAWS. Of course you do! You have such a perfect amount of suspense and humor in this piece. Did you know you started secure in a harness and ended secure on a trapeze bar? Really good. Carolyn

  4. Oh and Jacob: what a great job playing with time and space: after a few million years...my feet took four tiny steps. What a great way of showing how you dreaded the jump. GREAT! Carolyn
